Making of: Garlic Breakdance
the final frame

Eight seconds of animation, four days of work and a garlic bulb that dances better than I do.

First I did rough timing on paper β€” twenty-four frames, silhouettes only. That part always takes the least time and decides everything else.

Cleanup was slow. Every frame goes through twice: once for the outline, once for the shadows. I tried to skip the second pass and it showed immediately.

Where it went wrong

On the fourth day I realised the loop did not close β€” the last frame does not match the first. I had to redo six frames, which beats twenty-four.

Check that the loop closes before you clean up. I forget every time.

Colour came last and was the fastest part β€” three flat layers and one orange accent.

The full clip is on YouTube, and the raw frames will go into a future zine.
